THE CONCEPT OF SPIRITUAL HEALING IN ISLAM

Assalam oalaikum,

The concept of spiritual healing is not new to us as it has been extensively used since ages for curing ailments, whether physical, psychological or spiritual. I shall mention an authentic hadith here to prove the power of spiritual healing.

‘Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri-
Some of the Companions of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) came to across a tribe amongst the Arab tribes, who did not entertain them. While they were in that state the chief of the tribe was stung by a scorpion or bitten by a snake. They asked the Companions of the Holy Prophet (pbuh),’Have you got any medicine with you or can any one amongst you treat with Ruqyah? The Companions of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said, ‘You had refused to entertain us so we will not treat your chief unless you pay us for it. So they agreed to pay them a flock of sheep. One of the Companions of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) started reciting Surah Fatiha and gathering his saliva and spitting at the snake bite. The patient got cured and his people presented the flock of sheep to them. However, they said, ‘We will not take it unless we ask Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) whether it is lawful. When they asked him he smiled and said, ‘How do you know that Surah Fatiha is a Ruqyah? Take it (flock of sheep) and assign a share for me’ (SAHIH BUKHARI-VOLUME 7, NO. 632)

This shows that spiritual healing is a very powerful healing technique. Apart from this it is also essential for us to have a strong faith in Allah (swt) so that we can understand the importance of spiritual healing through the Holy Quran and ahadith. For the spiritual healing to be successful the two most important requirements are:- a strong and unflinching faith in Allah (swt) and a pious spiritual healer. How many of us would have the courage to cure a poisonous sting of a snake or a scorpion ourselves, by reciting Surah Fateha? Needless to say we would rush frantically to the emergency of a nearby hospital, for the treatment. So awareness about Islamic spiritual healing or Ruqyah is of utmost importance.
Allah (swt) says in the Holy Quran:
‘And We send down from the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy for those who believe’ (TMQ: 17:82)

I have hitherto explained that Islamic spiritual healing is a powerful tool by means of which we can heal the physical, psychological as well as spiritual disorders. Now I would like to draw the attention of my readers to another important point pertaining to this topic. Though Islamic spiritual healing is quite effective and successful yet it does not contradict medicinal treatment at all. It rather complements it. There is enough evidence in the ahadith which shows that the followers of Islam have been encouraged to seek medicinal help, if necessary.

Once Prophet Mohammad (saw) was asked by a desert dweller, ‘O Messenger of Allah, should we seek medical treatment’. Prophet Mohammad (saw) replied, ‘Seek medical treatment for truly Allah has not sent down a disease without sending down a cure for it. Those who have the knowledge of the cure know it and those who are ignorant of it do not’. (Musnad Ahmad: 18456).

This hadith proves that medicinal treatment should also be sought along with spiritual healing. In a nutshell, in order to get a speedy recovery from an ailment; a person should focus on both the spiritual healing as well as medicinal healing. If one of them is ignored then there are chances of deterioration in health or a delay in recovery. There should be a balance in utilizing both types of healing methods. In the olden times the focus was more on spiritual healing whereas during the modern times there is an inclination towards the medicinal healing methods. However, it is essential to strike a balance between these two types of healing methods, for best results.

When we discuss about spiritual healing the topic of a spiritual healer cannot be far behind. Several questions may arise in our minds about those people who are entitled do perform spiritual healing. Are the spiritual healers supposed to be Islamic scholars? What are the dos and the don’ts of being a spiritual healer? What are the requisites of being a successful spiritual healer? What is the approved method of doing spiritual healing in Islam?

In this blog, I will Inshallah make an earnest attempt to answer all these questions, by thoroughly exploring the qualities which should be found in an Islamic spiritual healer and much more.

TYPES OF SPIRITUAL HEALING

Assalam oalaikum,

In Islam, spiritual healing can be done only with the help of Quranic verses and the prayers mentioned in the ahadith. The techniques may differ from each other but all of them have to be based entirely on the Quranic verses or the ahadith. For example: A man consults a Muslim spiritual healer to cure some ailment. The spiritual healer may give him an amulet or taweez to wear, which will have Quranic verses written on it. If the same man goes to some other Muslim spiritual healer then maybe he would give him some Quranic verses written on a piece of white paper in saffron. The man would be advised to soak a piece of paper in water and drink it daily. Some other Muslim spiritual healer may give the man a paper with the required Quranic verses and ask him to make a frame and hang it on a wall in his house. So whereas the techniques of spiritual healing may be differ according to the needs and the situation but the base will be the Quran and the hadith only.

Broadly speaking, there are 4 types of ailments which can be successfully cured with the help of Islamic spiritual healing:

Physical ailments
Psychological ailments
Evil eye
Black magic

As far as the first problem is concerned there is enough evidence in the ahadith to prove that spiritual healing can do wonders to cure physical ailments.

Narrated Hazrat Ayesha (ra) ‘When Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) was ill he would recite Al-Mu’awwidhatayn (Quranic verses: 113 &114) over himself and spit dryly. When his pain grew intense I recited over him and wiped him with his own hand, seeking its barakah (blessing’. (Bukhari: 4728 & Muslim: 2192)

Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said, ‘Fatihatul Kitab contains healing for every disease. (Tirmithi)

The above mentioned ahadith show that spiritual healing with the Holy Quran is beneficial in alleviating physical pain. In fact, Surah Fateha has been described by our beloved Prophet (pbuh) as a healing verse for every disease.

As far as the psychological ailments such as grief, anxiety, depression etc are concerned, one of the ways of curing them has been mentioned in the Saheeh hadith from Ibn Masood (ra), which says: ‘There is no one who is afflicted with grief and distress and says , ‘O Allah! I am your slave, son of your slave; son of your maidservant, my forelock is in Your Hand, Your Command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book or You taught to any of Your creation or You have preserved in the knowledge of the Unseen with you that You make the Quran the light of my heart and the light of my breast and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety, but Allah will take away his distress and grief and replace it with joy.

Now let us come to the 3rd point, i.e. evil eye. Islamic spiritual healing is successful in warding off the negative effects of evil eye. The meaning of evil eye is that the gaze of the envious people is poisonous and it can cause much harm, injury, illness and even death of those whom it penetrates. When an envious person gazes at the object of his envy, negative energies emanate from his or her eyes and they cling on to the object of envy, till they have almost destroyed it.  There are many ahadith which prove that Islamic spiritual healing can help us cure the problem of evil eye.
Holy Prophet (pbuh) said, ‘The evil eye is real and if anything could overtake the Divine Decree (Al-Qadar), it would be the evil eye’. (Muslim 2188)
It was narrated that Hazrat Ayesha (ra) said, ‘The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) commanded me or he commanded the people to use Ruqyah to deal with the evil eye’.(Narrated by Al-Bukhari, Al-Tibb: 5297)

Coming to the last point, i.e. black magic, spiritual healing is the only cure for it as no doctor or psychologist can diagnose it, not to speak of curing it.
‘Narrated Abu Said al-Khudri, ‘The Prophet (pbuh) used to seek protection against the jinn and the evil eye till Surah Naas and Surah Falaq were revealed. After they were revealed he stuck to them and discarded everything else besides them.’ (Transmitted by Tirmidhi)

I will conclude this post by highlighting the main points once again:
Spiritual healing techniques in Islam may differ but they have to be based entirely on the Quranic verses or the traditions of the Prophet (pbuh), in order to be successful.
A pious Muslim spiritual healer can cure a vast array of ailments such as physical and emotional pain and also evil eye and black magic with the help of the Quran and the ahadith.

THE MUSLIM SPIRITUAL HEALER SHOULD BE PUNCTUAL IN OFFERING SALAAH

Assalam oalaikum,
Salaah, which is the second pillar of Islam, has been enjoined upon every sensible Muslim, five times daily. There is a plethora of evidence which can prove the importance of Salaah in Islam.

Hazrat Ayesha (ra) states, ‘The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) had a very nice habit. Whenever they entered a house, he used to greet and talk to everyone in a very polite and gentle way. However, as soon as he heard the adhaan, he ignored all of us as if he did not even know us’.
Hazrat Nawfil bin Muawigah narrates that he heard Allah’s Apostle (pbuh) saying: ‘A person who has missed one Salaat is like the one who has lost all his family and wealth’.
Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said, ‘A person who neglects his Salaat (even though he makes it up later), shall remain in hell for a period of one Huqb.
Once Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) saw Hazrat Abu Huraira lying on his stomach. Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) asked, ‘Are you suffering from stomach ache? He replied, ‘Yes’. Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said, ‘Then get up and busy yourself with Salaat for it will heal you’. This hadith reflects the healing properties of Salaat.
Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said, ‘Salaat is the pillar of Islam and it has ten virtues: It is the charm of the face, a light of the heart, health and refreshment for the body, a company in the grave, a means for the descent of Allah (swt)’s Mercy, a key to the Heaven, a weight of the scales (of good deeds), a way of winning Allah’s Goodwill, a price of Paradise and a protection against the fire of Hell. A person who is particular of Salaat, in fact establishes deen and the one who neglects it demolishes, so to say, the structure of deen’.

I had made it clear in my earlier posts that Islamic spiritual healing can be done only with the help of the Holy Quran and the ahadith. Now we know that the ahadith are full of evidence which state the significance of Salaah. So will it be possible for a person to do spiritual healing successfully without being punctual in Salaah? Definitely not! Punctuality in Salaah is the top-most requirement of a Muslim spiritual healer. Unless and until a Muslim spiritual healer protects his Salaat, by offering Salaah five times daily, he will have no right or spiritual power to protect others; through spiritual healing. Spiritual healing in Islam is a privilege reserved for the pious. A person who sins by neglecting his Salaah can by no means be suitable for healing others through the Holy Quran and ahadith.

I would like to end this post on the note that in today’s world one may come across many people, both men and women, who claim to possess mystical powers. Before consulting any Muslim spiritual healer one should observe whether the healer is punctual in his or her Salaah or not. I have come across many such people who are fake healers and who do not fulfill their basic religious obligations but make tall claims, in order to cheat their clients. Therefore, one should not rely on any person who claims to be a spiritual healer.

A SPIRITUAL HEALER SHOULD PREFERABLY BE AN AMIL-KAMIL

Assalam oalaikum,

In this post I shall discuss another important quality which is required to become a successful Muslim spiritual healer.
Besides being punctual in offering Salaah 5 times daily, a healer should preferably be an amil for the simple reason that only an amil can be well-versed with Ilm-e-Taweez. Taweez or amulets play an important role in Muslim spiritual healing. They are prepared painstakingly keeping in mind certain conditions such as the phases of the Moon etc. They are made for various purposes such as to tackle physical ailments, psychological ailments, such as fear in children or to protect someone from the evil eye or the onslaught of black magic jinns. Preparation of the taweez, which have Quranic verses written on them, is a difficult task which cannot be done by a layman. So a Muslim spiritual healer should also be an amil.
There has been much propaganda against the use of taweez, which have the Quranic verses written on them, on the pretext that they promote shirk or that they are worn in dirty places, such as the toilets. However, a taweez, which has the verses from the Holy Quran written on them for the purpose of protection, can never be referred to as shirk or bidaah/ innovation. How can a Quranic verse promote sins such as innovation? Moreover, the amulets are completely sealed so there is no harm in wearing them. There is no point in making a mountain out of an ant hill. As a matter of fact, our soul is also a spiritual, heavenly entity but we are not supposed to leave it outside the toilet before entering it. Here is the necessary evidence from the Holy Quran to substantiate my point:

Allah (swt) says in the Holy Quran:
“And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: ‘I am going to create a man (Adam) from sounding clay of altered black, smooth mud. When I have brought him to perfection and breathed My spirit-into him, you should bow down before him all together’. (TMQ- 15:28-29)

So, besides the physical body, a man also possesses a spirit, which is breathed into his body by his Creator, Allah (swt). However, out of necessity, we have to attend nature’s calls, by going into a toilet. Likewise, there is seemingly no harm in wearing a taweez that is totally sealed; out of necessity, 24/7.

Coming to my next point, i.e. a Muslim spiritual healer should also preferably be a Kamil, I shall explain it by giving an example. If a person falls sick and has to consult a good doctor then he will be satisfied to see that the doctor is an MBBS. The patient will be happy to see that he is in safe hands and not in the hands of a quack. On the other hand, if the patient comes to know that the doctor also has other qualifications such as an MD, MS or a FRCS degree then the patient will be more than happy. Likewise, if your spiritual healer is an amil then it is good for you but if he also happens to be kamil then it will be a great option for you. More knowledge, expertise and experience make an amil a kamil or perfect. Therefore, it would be the best option to consult an amil-kamil for the purpose of spiritual healing.

A MUSLIM SPIRITUAL HEALER SHOULD BE PIOUS

Assalam oalaikum,

Spiritual healing is a noble deed and hence it requires a noble intention or niyaah before doing it as well. In Islam noble deeds are identified as acts done in order to earn Allah (swt)’s Goodwill. The condition which makes a good deed acceptable is that it should be for the sake of Allah (swt).
Ibn Ijlaan had stated that ‘The action is not acceptable except by three- Taqwaah of Allah (swt), good intention and correctness, i.e. conformity to the Sunnah’.

It goes without saying that a Muslim spiritual healer should have a strong faith in Allah (swt) and also in the fact that it is Allah (swt) alone who can heal. If is often seen that when someone gets healed by a doctor then the healed person says that so and so doctor has healing powers in his hands. In this way the person also encourages others to consult that particular doctor for a quick recovery. However, the statement, ‘So and so doctor has healing powers’ is considered to be a Bidaah or innovation and should be avoided for the simple reason that in Islam it is only Allah (swt) who has the real healing powers. No doctor can take the credit of healing a patient because the only healer is Allah (swt). One of the beautiful names of Allah (swt) is Ya Shaafi, which means ‘The Healer’.

Besides being a pious, a Muslim spiritual healer should have a good niyaah or intention too. Unfortunately, some quacks have entered the field of spiritual healing with the sole aim of fooling people for their own benefit. Some of these fraudsters transcend the limits set by Islam when it comes to healing their patients, especially the womenfolk. Ruqyah, as most of us know, is a form of spiritual healing in which the Quranic verses are recited by the Raaqi. After the recitation the Raaqi blows his breathe over the patient. This is the simple way in which Ruqyah is allowed in Islam. Unfortunately, a lot of black magicians and fraudsters have also entered this field and they have changed the Islamic way of performing a Ruqyah. As a result of this many Satanic, corrupt and sinful practices have made their way into this field. The simple blowing of breathe over a female patient after recitation of the Quranic verses has been replaced by touching the body of the woman. In some cases, naïve women are asked to expose their affected body parts for a better cure. Moreover, asking women to come for a Ruqyah session, without a male escort is not less than a crime in Islam. According to a hadith, ‘A man and a woman are never alone together, except that Satan is a third party with them’. Therefore, it is essential from the Islamic point of view that during a Ruqyah session a woman should come along with her male guardian.

In a nutshell, a Muslim spiritual healer should be pious and he should perform Ruqyah with the good intention of obtaining Allah (swt)’s Goodwill. Encouraging the female patients to come alone or touching them or gazing at their bare body parts is just the opposite of Islamic healing methods. A pious Muslim spiritual healer will never dare to employ such non-Islamic healing methods, due to fear of Allah (swt).

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SPIRITUAL HEALING IN ISLAM

Assalam oalaikum,

In the present times, the root cause of most of the diseases seems to be either a virus or bacteria. Diseases may also be associated with other physical factors such as a faulty diet or lifestyle, stress etc. Accordingly, people try to heal themselves with the help of the various medications which are available these days, be it allopathic or homeopathic, osteopathy or naturopathy.
However, according to Islam the root cause of any disease is not just a physical factor, though it may appear to be one. The actual cause of any disease, injury or mishap is related to some factors which have a supernatural element in it. This may sound to be obsolete to some but it is true any way.

It was narrated that Hazrat Ayesha (ra) said, ‘When the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was ill, he would recite al-Mu’-awwidhatayn over himself and spit dryly. When his pain grew intense, I recited over him and wiped him with his own hands, seeking its barakah (blessing)’. (Bukhari-4728).

Although there were some forms of treatment prevalent during the times of the Prophet (pbuh) such as cupping, venesection and cautery yet the Holy Prophet (pbuh) used to heal himself by reciting Ruqyah with Surah Falaq and Surah Naas. The main reason why the last two Surahs were recited by the Holy Prophet during an illness is due to the Islamic belief that the root cause of every ailment is evil eye. So the initial treatment for any ailment should be the recitation of Al-Mu’awwidhatayn rather than anything else. After all Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) used to successfully heal himself with these two Quranic verses. However, if adverse effects caused by the evil eye are left unrestricted and unchecked then one can use other forms of medication, whether modern or traditional.

According to a hadith Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said, ‘Most of those who die among my followers die because of the Will and Decree of Allah and then because of evil eye.

So we find that the evil eye, which is a venomous look cast by the envier on the person whom he or she envies, happens to be the root cause of a lot of misery. It can lead to injury, mishaps, ailments and even death.
So, Ruqyah plays a very important role in suppressing a disease before it gets aggravated. However, there is a specific condition that should be met in order to perform Ruqyah successfully. The Muslim spiritual healer should be well versed with the Islamic way of performing Ruqyah, i.e. by excluding from it all the elements of shirk, bidaah, kufr or black magic.

A MUSLIM SPIRITUAL HEALER SHOULD BE A TRUE FOLLOWER OF ISLAM

Assalam oalaikum,

In this concluding post, I shall discuss the remaining qualities which a good Muslim spiritual healer should possess. As we know there is a thin line between the good and the evil. Likewise, inclusion of some innovative methods (bidaah) or employing practices which deviate from the teachings of the Prophet (pbuh) can transform an Islamic Ruqyah into an evil one. Therefore, sticking to the principles of Islam is of utmost importance for a good spiritual healer. A successful Muslim spiritual healer should get all his facts straight before venturing into this field.

There is some confusion regarding the use of charms, spells and amulets in Islamic healing. These things are often confused with a taweez which have Quranic verses mentioned on them. Many Muslim scholars have agreed that there is no harm in wearing a taweez around one’s neck as long as the taweez contains Quranic verses.
I have mentioned a hadith here to substantiate my point that there is no harm in using a Quranic taweez by a Muslim spiritual healer:

Narrated Abdullah Ibn Masud: Zainab, the wife of Abdullah ibn Masud told that Abdullah said: ‘I heard the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) saying that spells, charms and love portions are polytheism. I asked ‘Why do you say this? I swear by Allah, when my eye was discharging I used to go to so and so Jew who applied a spell to me. When he applied the spell to me, it calmed down. Abdullah said, ‘That was just the work of the Devil who was picking it with his hand and when he uttered the spell on it, he desisted. All you need to do is to say as the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) used to say: Remove the harm, O Lord of men, and heal. Thou art the Healer. There is no remedy but Thine which leaves no disease behind’. (Sunan Abu Dawood- Book: 28; No.3874)

This hadith clearly states that charms, spells and love portions are polytheism. However, the things which the Muslims are instructed to abstain from in this hadith have got nothing to do with the taweez, which has the Quranic verses written on it and is completely sealed. Love portions, spells and charms which have been banned in Islam are all related to black magic and superstitions and they include charm bracelets, touch coins, amulets, talisman, painted pebbles.
I shall define some of these objects briefly in order to show that they have got nothing to do with Islam. That is the main reason why they have been banned, according to the hadith mentioned above.

Amulets refer to objects such as plants, inscribed gems, statues, drawings, rings and pendants which are touted to have powers to protect those who use them. This is strictly against the tenets of Islam; therefore, according to the hadith mentioned above, such things are prohibited in Islam.
Talisman is another type of object which is said to have magical powers and which needs to be recharged. They can have an integrated color, a Kabbalistic figure, symbology or other magical associations. Due to their magical properties, they have been banned in Islam.
Spells include magical formulae which are supposed to create some specific effects. Since it involves magic so it is also banned in Islam.

So we find that the types of amulets, spells etc which have been prohibited as part of Islamic spiritual healing are those which are associated with magic, shirk or association partners with Allah (swt) and superstitions. The taweez which have Quranic verses on them do not promote shirk in any way like the amulets, charm bracelets etc do. Seeking protection from petty objects such as bracelets, drawings etc promotes shirk as it is tantamount to seeking help from others besides Allah (swt).
Through the Quranic taweez/amulets we seek help from only Allah (swt), who is All-Powerful and He alone can Protect us. So a taweez which has the Quranic verses written on it is an approved way of spiritual healing in Islam.

Secondly, as we have learnt through various authentic ahadith, a Ruqyah involves recitation of certain Quranic verses and then blowing thrice, powerfully, on the patient in order to heal him with the blessings of the Quran. Therefore, performing Ruqyah in a congregation by using a microphone for recitation cannot serve the purpose of a Ruqyah. It is only through blowing over the patient individually that the blessings of the Ruqyah can be availed by the patient. If the Raqi is resorting to a congregational Ruqyah in order to save his time and energy then it is quite evident that neither does he has the inclination to perform the Ruqyah in a correct way, nor will he blow on each patient as it should be done. This method is as absurd and should be avoided by an ideal, Muslim spiritual healer.
